TAKING THE CITY GRID & OPERATIONS OFF FOSSIL FUELS

A MORE EFFICIENT CITY POWER GRID KEPT CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE RUNNING

Efficiencies gained from a more sustainable power grid kept BRC’s critical infrastructure resilient through two rain events. We created smaller power grids, and coupled most grids with batteries. When the rain grounded fuel trucks, none of our grids went down — because they required less fuel.

EIGHT MOBILE SOLAR PROTOTYPES POWERED:

  • The Man Pavillion
  • The Temple
  • Center Camp
  • Gate
  • Department of Mutant Vehicles
  • Ranger Outpost Zero

… and supported 17 art installations.

COMMUNITY-DRIVEN PROJECTS LEADING THE WAY

“There’s an opportunity here with the Burning Man event to utilize it as a platform for lifting the voices who are already into sustainability, but also educating other people about sustainability and what that looks like both at the event and outside of it in the default world.”

~ KAT NADEL, COMPOST PROJECT LEAD

RENEWABLES FOR ARTISTS TEAM (RAT) educates and mentors artists and camps on adopting solar power. In their second year on playa, RAT mentored 27 art projects and three camps, up from 12 projects in 2022.

THE COMPOST PROGRAM, hosted at IDEATE, diverted approximately 5,000 gallons (or 25 yards) of food waste to a composting facility. Four hundred camps participated, representing 16,000 Black Rock citizens.

A GREEN THEME CAMP COMMUNITY project, Burner Leadership for Sustainable Theme Camps (BLAST) is a green camp rating system that mentors environmentally sustainable camps. BLAST assessed 16 camps on playa.
