ARTISTS’ GRIT AND DEDICATION

INSTALLING 383 ARTWORKS

During Build Week, Hurricane Hilary put a stop to all work for two days while the playa dried, stranding many artists outside BRC. ARTery and art support staff used the time to organize and plan ahead. The result: nearly 400 artworks were installed from the time the ARTery re-opened until BRC opened its gates to participants.

ART THAT FROLICKED, PURRED AND PREENED

Humanimals and all manner of fauna came to frolic in the vast Black Rock Desert. Among the art installations that rose on playa, 45% spoke to the ANIMALIA theme. There were fantastical creatures, wild and elusive forest beings, domesticated animal friends, and several creatures by Latin American artists — including “Quetzalcoatl,” an “Axolotl” and “Alebrijes.”

43% OF ALL FUNDED ART HAD A FEMALE LEAD

The Honoraria Program prioritized funding artworks led by women artists. “Temple of the Heart” had a female co-lead, Ela Madej, whose design blossomed with floral elements.

AN EMPHASIS ON SUSTAINABILITY, AND SOLAR POWER

We sought to support art that had an emphasis on environmental sustainability — thematically, logistically, or both.

  • All art in Black Rock City’s nine plazas, including Center Camp Plaza, was solar-powered.
  • The on-playa Man Pavillion build, Temple build and operations were powered by solar.
  • BMP’s Scarab solar units powered 17 art projects on playa.
  • The Temple was 100% powered by the sun, thanks to our Unicorn solar unit.
  • The Renewables for Artists Team (RAT) helped 27 art projects switch to solar.
  • “The Solar Library” by the Solarians, helped artists by offering battery charging stations.
