EXPLORING AND PRESERVING THE ROOTS OF BURNING MAN CULTURE

The Legacy Project is gathering the stories of Burning Man as told by instigators and collaborators going back more than 40 years. Stories stretch back to the early years of Black Rock City, the 1986 event on Baker Beach, and early cultural influences such as the Cacophony Society and San Francisco bohemian culture.

“Everybody going to Burning Man for the very first time experiences a thing that has a core value inside us as human beings that we all recognize. Your version of death and rebirth, fire and redemption. It’s a very, very deep-rooted thing in our psyche that trips the light fantastic for everybody going out there… It’s still a vital, vital experience.”

~ CHRIS RADCLIFFE, 1990S BLACK ROCK CITY INSTIGATOR “A People’s History of Burning Man, Volume 2” Burning Man Live podcast, Episode 88

I don’t mind if your Burn is just about coming and having an immersive dance experience, I don’t mind. But for me, it’s about changing the world. And you do that by accessing aspects of yourself that go dormant in the default world.
